Tennessee Arts Commission

Mission Statement

The mission of the Tennessee Arts Commission is that the citizens of Tennessee have access to and participate in the arts.

The Commission operates under a governance policy with specific goals or "Ends Statements" that guide the work of the agency.

  • "Cultural agencies are present and their activities utilized through out the state."

  • "Arts organizations are well supported."

  • "Artists work in a supportive environment."

  • "The people of Tennessee value the arts."

  • "The arts are vital to education and learning in Tennessee."

  • "Public policy is favorable toward Tennessee's arts industry."

  • "The People of Tennessee value their material and cultural history."

Hundreds of arts organizations – large and small, urban and rural – contribute daily to the rich cultural life of Tennessee. Through a variety of programs the Commission demonstrates a strong commitment toward encouraging excellence in artistic expression by supporting the state’s artists and arts organizations.

When the Tennessee Arts Commission was created in 1967, it was given a special mandate by the General Assembly to stimulate and encourage the presentation of performing, visual, and literary arts throughout the state, and to encourage public interest in the cultural heritage of Tennessee.

The Commission seeks to fulfill its mission with the adoption of goals that ensure cultural agencies are present and their activities utilized throughout the state. Funded by the Tennessee General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Commission contributes to Tennessee’s diverse nonprofit arts industry through matching grants, fellowships, and awards. Technical assistance and other services are also provided.

The activities of the Tennessee Arts Commission continue to provide Tennessee citizens a better quality of life, provide our children with a more complete education, and attract tourists to our state.
